With the increasing popularity of climbing comes crowded climbing gyms and increasing magnesium dust levels.

More and more articles can be found online. Some refer to dust levels as high as 100 times above EU limits (Dust Exposure in Indoor Climbing Halls) Other articles mention lung function declining 20% after just a few hours of exposure (Lung Function and Dust in Climbing Halls).

Long before the dust is visible to the human eye, the limit values are exceeded. Dust particle sizes normally range from 0,1 micrometre to 10 micrometre. The level of "ultra-fine dust" particles smaller than 0,1 micrometres is worrying as they enter the body through the lungs, but translocate to essentially all organs. The fine dust particles between 2,5 to 10 micrometres are where you have the highest concentrations in climbing gyms. These particles cause pulmonary inflammation but also retain long in the lungs.

The technology used in the ClimbLab filters is effective for ultra-fine as well as fine dust particles.

Why central systems fail

Central ventilation systems are often designed according to normal standards offering only 1-1,5 times air change of the room volume pr. hour. But polluted areas require as much as 4-6 air changes per hour.

Central systems are normally installed at the ceiling, but fine dust particles around 5-10 micrometers are relatively heavy so they will simply just fall to the mattresses and floors and keep being resuspended as people bounce on the mattresses. Central systems often lack the needed throw/draft to lead the particles to the filters where they can be collected.

The easiest way to control the dust level is by source control and to capture the dust as close as possible to the source (you). 

This is why the ClimbLab system comes with different installation possibilities. (wall mount, hanging, laying). You simply need to tailor the installation to your gym and the "Hot spots" where people climb and chalk up the most.

With the ClimbLab solution, you will be able to install the filters close to the source. As our air filters come with a high airflow fan you will be able to create the needed draft/suction effect to lead the particles to the air filter, where they are collected.

At the same time, you will be able to raise the air exchange rate for your gym to a higher level. Almost all gyms are lacking in ventilation as HVAC units are designed for a low air exchange ratio of <1,5. 

Our filters are tailored to capture high amounts of magnesium dust particles from 0,1- <10 micrometers with low energy consumption in mind. They are all A+ rated.

The electrostatic filters offer the lowest possible operation cost, whereas the pocket filters offer a lower investment cost.

For our electrostatic filters, you should expect to clean the cassettes every 3 months. Our pocket filter will operate for 6 months before you need to clean it and exchange the pocket filter.

Our electrostatic filters work by electrically charging the chalk dust particles and then catching them on negative collection plates. To optimize the efficiency, we have tailored parameters such as airflow and electrostatic voltage.

They offer the lowest possible operation cost and are recommended by Eurovent as they use very little energy. One filter can be operated for as low as 20 euros a year.

In addition to low energy consumption, the filter cassettes can be reused year after year. When a cassette is full you simply just rinse it with water and soap and insert it again.

Electrostatic filters come with a low noise level. Once installed you will not be able to hear them operate, as the level is as low as 52 dBA.

Pocket filter technology

Using a pocket filter is the traditional way of filtration and it's widely used. We have done several things to tailor the filter to the high amounts of chalk dust found in climbing gyms. 

The MERV rating for the pocket filter has been selected based on the chalk dust particle sizes found in climbing gyms. In addition, we use the widest and longest filter available to ensure high airflow at the lowest possible energy consumption. The filter is A+ energy-rated.

Using the largest filters also provides for the longest possible service intervals. Our pocket filters can run as long as 6 months between service intervalls.
